American Idol

Looking at the Nielsen ratings for the week of February 25th, “American Idol” was the most watched television show.  That is good news for that show, but it gets even better.  All top three spots for most viewed shows belong to American Idol.

In its seventh season, the popularity of this tv show is still immense.  Whether you’re hanging out at the office water cooler, riding the subway, or playing jumprope at the playground, you will hear multiple conversations about the show.  From elementary-aged children to senior citizens, this show has mass appeal.

Interestingly to me, out of the three episodes airing the last week in February, the first episode (Tuesday) was the most popular.  Creating a pattern, Wednesday came in second with a million fewer viewers than Tuesday, and Thursday came in third with a million fewer viewers than Wednesday.

Looking at the schedule for that week, the top ten males performed on Tuesday and the top ten females performed on Wednesday.  Thursday was the results show with two from each of the previous categories being voted off.  Not being an avid follower, I am curious about these ratings.  Wouldn’t you want to see the results to find out if your favorite performer has made the cut?  Or are people more interested in watching the performances and feedback, who cares how they fare?

Regardless to the reasoning, American Idol is the most popular television show currently on the air.  Seven seasons and still going strong, the producers know what most television viewers want.
