Glee? Not So Much

by Kaitlin on January 25th, 2012 | Comedy, Drama, Sitcom
When other people criticized Glee for being too cliché and annoying, I was one who defended it. It’s funny because of the stereotypes! The characters are supposed to be exaggerated! Normal people really do break into song all the time! OK, so maybe that last statement is totally false. But still. I liked Glee because it was ridiculous, because it poked fun at high school and the different types of people you encounter there. And also, it had Jane Lynch. Enough said.

Lately, though, watching Glee has been a bit of a chore for me. I didn’t even watch last Read More

Parks and Recreation’s Ron Swanson

by Ronald A. Rowe on December 7th, 2011 | Comedy, Sitcom
After starting as an attempt to duplicate the success that NBC had with The Office, Parks and Recreation has really come into its own in the past two seasons. There are a number of factors. The lead character, Leslie Knope, has transitioned from a female Michael Scott to her own person. A talented and diverse ensemble cast helps a lot. Good writing is essential. The addition of new cast members – Rob Lowe and Adam Scott - infused new life.

But one of my very favorite things about Parks and Recreation has been the development of the character of Ron Read More

New Girl Not Getting Old — Yet

by Kaitlin on November 16th, 2011 | Comedy, Sitcom, TV Personalities
Has there ever been a description of Zooey Deschanel that doesn't include the word "adorable" or "quirky"? ("Hot?" says my friend from work, but I digress.) Even our own Ron fell into the trap when he previewed her new sitcom,  New Girl, two months ago. Because of the (never-ending) World Series, we've only had five episodes so far, but the Tuesday night time slot is now officially reserved for the quirky adorableness of Jess and her antics as the only female in a testosterone-driven apartment.

New Girl is cute, I'll give you that -- both the show and the Read More

The Office’s Swan Song?

by Ronald A. Rowe on October 25th, 2011 | Comedy, Sitcom
This season may be the swan song for The Office, but the show isn’t going to roll over and die just because Steve Carell has called it quits. The World Series deprived us of a new episode this week, but the season so far has been resoundingly… OK. The quality is really no better or worse that it was under the final season featuring the exploits of Michael Scott.

After a year of Cathy Bates guest spots, her role has been replaced by James Spader as new Sabre CEO Robert California. The enigmatic and charismatic new boss brings a fresh Read More

How I (Maybe) Met Your Mother

by Kaitlin on October 19th, 2011 | Comedy, Sitcom
How I Met Your Mother has been one of my favorite shows for awhile now. I find the humor to be spot on, the relationships (both romantic and platonic) to be realistic, and the premise to be engaging. Lately, however, I've been getting frustrated. The goal of the show -- to learn how Ted (Josh Radner) meets the mother of  his children (to whom he is telling the story) -- has become unfocused. It seems as if the writers have forgotten that the entire point of the story is to meet this mysterious woman, and instead focus on the Read More
