Whatever Happened to Community?

by Ronald A. Rowe on October 13th, 2011 | Comedy, Sitcom
What happened to Community? Last season ended on a hilarious high note with the two-part paintball redux finale. Even though the finale was one story told over two weeks, the writers still maintained the paradigm of a new movie / theme / genre exploited each week, shifting beautifully from Western to Sci-Fi mid-story. Oh, those good old days of last year.

Now, three weeks into the new season, there has been nary a single film convention skewered. Community has become – gasp – a straight sitcom. The stories are about what they appear to be about without any deeper layers Read More

2 Broke Girls

by Kaitlin on October 6th, 2011 | Comedy, Sitcom
It's kind of crazy how much more time I have for new TV shows now that I'm not in college! Adjusting to my 9-5 is exhausting, but it's nice to come home and not have textbooks to read and papers to write. Still, the exhaustion is kicking in: for the past two weeks, I've been too tired to get off the couch after How I Met Your Mother, so I watched CBS' new Monday night comedy, 2 Broke Girls, instead of moving. Not the worst half hour I've ever spent!

Starring Kat Dennings (Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist)  and Beth Behrs as the Read More

Free Agents

by Ronald A. Rowe on September 30th, 2011 | Comedy, Sitcom
NBC has an entry in the new comedy department that may not be awful.  Actually, based on the first two episodes, Free Agents may have the right combination of clever writing and cast chemistry to make it a hit.  So, of course, the Peacock Network buried it in a dead-end time slot one week and schlepped it to a new spot for week two.  Oh, and the masses got bored half way through the first episode.

When I saw the advance materials for the show, I thought that it looked more like a movie trailer than Read More

Jane Espenson is back! Jane has written episodes for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Battlestar Galactica, Caprica, Dollhouse and Firefly. But this time, she's back with something different and she's teamed up with YouTube celebrity, Cheeks, to bring us a new comedy web series on marriage equality, Husbands!

Athlete Brady Kelly and actor Cheeks were just supposed to go to Vegas to celebrate the passing of marriage equality in the US. But they wake up the next day with rings on their fingers. To protect their public image, they decide to stay married and make it work. But how Read More

New Girl

by Ronald A. Rowe on September 16th, 2011 | Sitcom
Maybe there is hope for a new fall comedy that’s actually funny. Amidst the flurry of ill-conceived, cheesy, raunchy, soon-to-be-forgotten new offerings that the Big 4 Networks are serving up, one Fox entry looks like it holds some promise. The advance materials for New Girl, starring the ever-adorable Zooey Deschanel, actually gives me some reason to believe that the TV schlockmeisters have not gone completely devoid of clever and original ideas.

The basic setup for the show is pedestrian. After an ugly breakup with her former boyfriend, Jess feels the need to move out of her apartment and get a Read More
