A lot of shows have been either getting canceled by network executives or simply ending its run on the small screen.

Everywhere we look, it seems as if the US financial crisis has hit us big time. Retail stores are closing, companies are filing for bankruptcy and millions of employees are getting laid off. Apparently, even the TV scene in the US has been hit by the declining economy. A lot of shows have been getting canceled by network executives or simply ending their run on the small screen.

The canceled TV shows include:

The Ex List - canceled after four episodes; Elizabeth Reaser stars in this show about a girl who visits a fortune teller where she finds out that she’s already met the one. And now, she has to find out which one it is from her list of ex-boyfriends.

Lipstick Jungle - canceled after two seasons; Lipstick Jungle is the story of three friends, an editor-in-chief of a hot fashion magazine, a movie executive and an up-and-coming fashion designer, who experience life at the top of their games.

MADtv- canceled after fourteen seasons; MADtv is a sketch comedy show, which parodies a lot of popular TV shows, movies and politics.

My Own Worst Enemy - canceled after nine episodes; Christian Slater stars in an action-packed show about a man leading a double life, as a simple businessman and a trained hitman, and never knowing about the identity of the other.

The TV shows ending their run on TV include:

Boston Legal - ending after five season on air

ER - ending after fifteen seasons

King Of The Hill - ending after thirteen seasons

Late Night With Conan O’Brien - ending after sixteen seasons

The Shield - ending after seven seasons

The Tonight Show With Jay Leno - ending after seventeen seasons

Are your favorite shows still on air? Or have they just been canceled?

Maybe you do have cable or something else and there’s never anything on, I find it happening every day. There are other ways to watch television shows and media: through your PC. Yes, you heard me correctly, as long as you have a computer that can access the internet, who needs cable?

Joost is a neat little program that streams television shows, music videos, and movies straight to your computer. The program works somewhat like a peer sharing program. However, have no fear, it’s nothing like those programs and doesn’t add in extra spyware and dangerous files on your computer. The program was designed by the same people who created Kazaa and already has an extensive user base. It includes access to over 1,000 different shows from stations like MTV, CNN, Comedy Central, CBS, National Geographic, Adult Swim and many others. Better yet, the current database of available shows is still growing. The only thing required to install the program is a registration on the official site (which is free) and an active internet connection.

TV.com is another great site that allows users to browse and watch full length television shows right on the website without installing any software. The website also serves up a daily batch of celebrity and media centered gossip. Shows available for streaming include Knight Rider, Brotherhood, Survivor, Prison Break, and many others.

WorldTVPC.com is another website which allows media streaming over the internet onto a PC. One of the biggest problems with this site, however, is that the media is streamed directly through Youtube, meaning video content may not be very high quality. With the integration of Youtube on the site, it means there is practically no limitation to what can be viewed. The website also can stream user-uploaded content and videos. Of course with that in mind, viewers can just hop on over to Youtube’s official site instead and begin watching shows on there.

One of the best shows to come out of the small screen today is definitely Tim Kring's Heroes. Strangers all over the world find out that they have one thing in common: they all possess a unique ability that makes them extraordinary people.

One of the best shows to come out of the small screen today is definitely Tim Kring’s Heroes. Strangers all over the world find out that they have one thing in common: they all possess a unique ability that makes them extraordinary people.

It started out great. People all over the world tuned in every week to find out what has happened to their favorite hero. They discuss the show with their friends, offline and online, and try to analyze the stories of the different heroes.

But somewhere along the way, something went wrong. It became too much too fast. People couldn’t keep up and suddenly, they disappeared. What happened? Was Heroes a victim of the sophomore slump? Why did they go from extraordinary to ordinary?

Season 1

Season 1 started out great. Here was this show that one would think was about ordinary people living ordinary lives. The same old boring stuff we see on TV everyday. But then we find out that they’re not ordinary people but people who have been gifted with extraordinary powers. What should they do with these powers? Use them to control people? Ignore them? Or use them to help others? No one could understand why they are the way they are. No one could understand how they got their powers.

The season ended great. In fact, it ended too great because that’s when the problem started. How do you top off your best work?

Season 2

The creators and writers decided to start with the beginning in this season of Heroes. What happened? How did they become who they are? How did they get their powers?

They transported Hiro Nakamura to the past, to the guy that started it all: Takezo Kensei, an English guy who does not even know he possesses any kind of power. Hiro then struggles to help Kensei use his powers to pave the way for the “future Heroes”.

Meanwhile, everyone else in the present times are confused and do not know how to try and live their lives after defeating the evil that was Sylar. At this point, we find out more about the company that studies their powers and the people responsible behind it.

During this time, the Writer’s Guild Strike was about to happen and could have been the cause of distraction for all the writers. They stopped writing the season after 8 episodes and left us halfway before the season was supposed to end.

In this season, they introduced new characters that could be pivotal to future stories but were honestly just annoying and distracting. We wanted to know what happened to the heroes, and they didn’t really give us that.

The season ends and everyone tries to forget about Season 2.

Season 3

By this time, people are wary. Will it be better this time around or will the slump of season 2 continue in this latest season? A lot of questions were asked and answered. Our favorite characters came back, and we found out more about them.

But primarily, the season hasn’t been off to a good start. There are still too many characters that the writers don’t know where to place. Story lines are good but underdeveloped. I don’t blame them. It’s hard to work on one story when you have to work on 10 others.

On that note, I honestly believe that the writers should stop introducing more and more characters every week. They should concentrate on a few and just shuffle back and forth between them, just like what they did in the first season.

When thoughts are mustered about the first few premieres of the current season of Heroes, only one question comes to mind. Does the famed show Heroes need help from a lesser sidekick?

Fans of the show have no doubt seen the first few episodes of this season and have realized the changes, which in many cases are extreme. Several supporting and less popular heroes, who will remain unnamed, have all but disappeared from the show. A love interest between two of the most popular heroes also has popped up seemingly out of nowhere. Which leaves the fans to further question, what other bland “treats” will pop up later in the season?

Is it too early to judge whether the show is truly sinking or not? Considering the fact that most television shows do lose their sweet taste over time, with few exceptions, will that ultimately be the case with Heroes?

NBC even reported that the season debut, and most recent broadcasts, had a decreasing number of ratings. Comments and blogs on fan sites everywhere also have indicated that near cult followers have begun to lose interest.

Maybe it’s time for the superheroes of Heroes to call in a favor to a few of their sidekicks and help bring the ratings back up. The second season was a little confusing and had quite excessive amounts of new heroes popping up here and there, but the overall ratings still remained high. Inclusively, the second season, while not the best, was very entertaining.

Let’s hope the producers and writers bring some more interesting content into the show and revive fan-boy interest before it’s too late.

Reality shows have been played on TV for what seems like forever now. And I don’t think they’re going away for a long, long time. Reality shows have a contrasting effect on people. People either love them or they hate them. There are some shows that are always interesting and I look forward to watching every season, like Project Runway, The Amazing Race, etc. And then there are reality shows that are just bordering on unnecessary, superficial and plain annoying. These are the shows that make people curse the existence of reality shows because these shows are sometimes headlined by people who just want to be under the limelight.

Admittedly, I love reality shows. But only to a limit. There are some shows, okay, a lot of reality shows that I would not dare watch. And there are some that I look forward to watching every season. These are some of them.

1. Project Runway

I love fashion and that’s why I love Project Runway. I love seeing new pieces constructed every week. They’re not always the most fashionable or the most wearable, but it’s always interesting to see what fashion designers can create under the most enormous amount of pressure. I’ve not always agreed with the judges each time, but I still watch it every time.

2. The Amazing Race

The Amazing Race is the reality show that fulfills the dreams of almost everyone in the entire world: to race around the world and get paid a million dollars if you emerge on top. It’s not the easiest situation, but it gets really crazy! It’s been 13 seasons, but it always gets interesting. The fact that there are different types of people joining every season and never put into the same situation twice is enough reason to tune in and see how they’ll react to every situation they’re thrown in.

3. American Idol

It has become boring the last two seasons, but American Idol still remains a favorite. I love listening to music, and I’m always trying to discover new music to listen to. American Idol gives me a chance not only to do that but to witness the evolution of a new artist. Sometimes that doesn’t happen, but, hey, it’s still fun to watch and pretend to be a judge.

What about you? Do you watch reality shows? What’s your favorite?

With all the new series premieres this fall, television enthusiasts will have their hands quite full. Unfortunately its tough to foresee just how enjoyable most of these new series will be. One show that looks particularly interesting but could certainly miss its mark is a new series premiering on CBS called The Eleventh Hour. The show is based on a British mini-series of the same name that starred Patrick Stewart. (Yes, the bald guy who played Captain Picard in Star Trek.) The new series stars Rufus Sewell (A Knight’s Tale, Tristan & Isolde, The Illusionist) as Jacob Hood, a leading biophysicist who is called in by the government to solve abnormal scientific crimes at a late hour.

In the British series the same character, Jacob Hood, was brought in to investigate cloning, a more intensified global warming problem, and even a religious scandal involving the cure for cancer. If the US show follows the established roots of the original show carefully, the CBS version should prove quite interesting. Although the series is categorized as a sci-fi thriller, the show is more along the lines of a realistic crime series like CSI. None of the science is too unbelievable, and most of the solutions could be closely tied in to actual truths.

Both the series trailer and pilot trailer can be seen on the official CBS website. They tell as much about the show, however, as a piece of grass would tell about life’s secrets. The one thing I do know for sure after watching is that the main character’s dialogue will be filled with plenty of dry, sarcastic humor. This seems very familiar, but I’m not sure where else we have seen it… [*cough* CSI *cough*].

On a side note, doesn’t it seem like most new shows these days are stealing something from CSI? Such shows like [*ahem] Fringe, The Mentalist, and so on and so forth. Anyway, I digress…

Judging by the trailer alone I would have to say this show will more than likely just fall in the ranks with the rest of the genre, providing very little new material, if there is any at all. I hope however that I am wrong. It is worthy to note that Jerry Bruckheimer is producing the series.

We will bear witness on Thursday, October 9th, 10 pm et/pt when The Eleventh Hour premieres. God save the queen, or President, I suppose, in the US series’ case.

Lots of US TV programs have started the fall season since September 1, and a lot more are expected to start until the middle of October. What are you looking forward to watching? Have you liked what you’ve watched since the start?

There aren’t a lot of good shows that have started yet. Gossip Girl has started and is always something I look forward to every week. It’s not what I would have liked, as expected, but it started that way last season also. Hopefully, it will pick up by the fourth or fifth episode.

Beverly Hills 90210 was a big disappointment. I think some people watched it regularly, but I found it shallow and boring. The issues were very predictable and boring. I felt no sympathy for the characters and found myself surprised when I realized it was a two-hour premiere. An hour tested my patience, two hours was unbearable. I was looking forward to the scenes with Kelly Taylor in it, but there weren’t very many. I thought the scene where Brenda Walsh first appears would be quite exciting, but it was so anti-climactic. It wasn’t a good experience. I probably won’t be watching it again soon.

Next week, new seasons for Grey’s Anatomy, Heroes and Ugly Betty are starting, and I’m real excited about that. Will Derek and Meredith finally get together forever? Will Dr. Hahn finally recognize Cristina’s abilities? Will George finally get what he deserves? Will Dr. Bailey reconcile with her husband? What will happen to all the heroes? Will Peter come back to the present from the future? Will Hiro stop Adam? Will Betty be able to choose between Henry and Gio? And next month, new season episodes for Samantha Who, Pushing Daisies and The Starter Wife will be premiering also.

What shows are you looking forward to watching?

The name sits with several recent shows and movies quite well. If you do not know him, then you may know his work: TV shows and films such as Lost, Alias, Cloverfield and, yes, even Felicity.

I was an early fanboy of Lost; I must admit the show started out quite interesting. Season one ended with many questions left unanswered that had many viewers hooked. After season one, however, the show just got most of its viewers, well…Lost- including me. For those of you still hooked on the show’s bizarre twists and turns you are quite aware of the long waiting periods between new shows being cooked up. With the new season set to air in early 2009, a good substitute will be required in the meantime.

What better substitute than a show created by the very same producer? The same quirky genre may not exactly be there, but the same taste still will be evident.

Fringe, a new scientific crime show with roots similar to that of X-files, premiered Sunday, September 14th, at 8/7 central. The show has harbored a widespread community, which appears to be growing rapidly. The official website contains links to a wiki dedicated to the show where viewers can discuss and express their opinions on the series to others. The website also hosts a link to view the pilot and the first full episode in the event you missed the premiere.

The show kicks off in an airplane, a strange man injects himself with some kind of virus and minutes later the entire passenger and crew population are infested. I won’t go into particulars, but the show’s main character, FBI special agent Olivia Dunham, embarks on a journey, so to speak, to find out what exactly happened on board the flight. With a certain personal connection, the main character, Olivia, only has so much time to find out what the virus is and what happened.

If you are looking for a great substitute until Lost airs in early 2009, Fringe should fill that void and keep you interested. If you are looking, however, for a brand new show which defines the sci-fi genre, you might not be so lucky.

Last night was the series premiere of this generation’s spin-off of Beverly Hills 90210, the teenage cult show from the early 1990s. And did it pass the test?

Um, not so much.

Where should I start?

1. Characters

Almost all the characters were very predictable and very flat. I felt no sympathy nor joy for the characters whatsoever. When the lead actress and actor (the Brandon and Brenda Walsh of the series) got into trouble, I felt no sympathy for them because I couldn’t relate to what they were going through. It’s almost as if the writers depended on people knowing the stereotypes to attempt to develop the characters in the series. The only positive thing about the characters of the new generation is that they resemble the original characters that much.

2. Actors

The actors in this series are mostly new-ish actors and actors that have not been seen on the big and small screen lately. One of the reasons the characters were so flat is because the actors weren’t very good. It was all just so predictable and typical. It was confusing getting to know the different characters because the actors, especially the teenage characters, somehow all looked very similar to each other, which made it hard for me to distinguish one from the other.

3. Storylines

The storylines were somewhat insulting and boring. It offered nothing new and didn’t give the audience a new dimension to the characters. It was the usual “former best friend trying to bring down her more popular former best friend” and “I’m the popular girl so I can make your life hell” kind of stories. Nothing new.

Hopefully, since this is just the series premiere, it will improve gradually. I’m really hoping that’ll happen because I love the original show. And I am willing to give this new show a chance. I just hope the writers step up to the plate.
