Saturday Night Live

Recently, my family has taken up the practice of watching Saturday Night Live as a family.  It is a hilarious show that is always fun and an all-time classic.  The show is popular with all and has an excellent cast and writers.

Saturday Night Live has an interesting history, going back to the 1970s.  During the early 1970s, NBC ran The Best of CarsonThe Tonight Show reruns of that aired on Saturday or Sunday night from 1965 until 1975 (originally known as The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson). In 1974, Johnny Carson wanted the weekend shows to be pulled and aired during the week, so he could view them during his time off.  NBC approached Dick Ebersol in 1974 and asked him to create a show to fill the Saturday night time-slot. Ebersol asked Lorne Michaels to create a variety show that would push the boundaries with its risque style of humor.

And that story has, over time, evolved into what we know as Saturday Night Live.

Today, SNL is famous as one of the few live TV shows on today.  The cast is a mix of comedians and actors.  Many famous comedians began there, for example Eddie Murphy, Tina Fey, and Bill Murray.  The show is played on NBC every Saturday night at 11:29:30 p.m. Eastern Time.  The show runs until about 1 a.m.   The show always has a musical guest and one or two ‘hosts’.  The show has its own in house band like most late night shows.  The show begins with a sketch and ends with the whole cast and guests standing and talking.  Also, the first sketch ends with a character say (or yelling) “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!”  If something goes wrong during a showing, the rerun is edited, often with the taped dress rehearsal instead.  For example,  in 2009 during the season premiere, Jenny Slate was in a ‘Biker Babe’ sketch where she and co-star Kristen Wiig used the word ‘frickin’ repeatedly. Slate slipped and said ‘f*ckin’ instead, which was later replaced with ‘frickin’ for subsequent repeats.

This show is now an American staple in the field of comedy, making fun of everything and anything that is available.  Saturday Night Live is one of the best comedy shows ever!
