Every year I view season finale week with a mixture of joy and sadness. Joy because many of our favorite show writers save the best for last. Sadness because the long, entertainment-deprived summer lies just ahead.
I use a pretty big stick to measure season finales. I expect a lot from that last show of the season. So far this year, I’ve been pleased.
Community, which is rapidly growing on me, has really come into its own. They finally delivered some laugh out loud spots, interspersed with some dramatic (ok, comically-dramatic) moments. Jeff’s dilemma and corresponding choice left me laughing and wondering what next season holds.
Parks and Recreation managed something of a cliff hanger. Not “Who Shot JR?” caliber, but a small-town government shut down rife with possibilities for next year.
The Office, once my favorite comedy, has fallen off this season. It delivered an OK finale, funny but forgettable. My question to my fellow Office-fans is: when did Jim become a secondary character? Jim’s antics used to be the highlight of the show, now he’s a background character in the Michael Scott story.
I wasn’t too sure what I’d think about the House finale. To me, the previews gave the impression that it could go either way. I was thrilled to see the show wrap the season with an episode that was spot on. The main story, revolving around House’s efforts to rescue a woman trapped under tons of rubble, was nothing short of fantastic. House was right in character, the emotion was high, and the punches just kept coming.
The last five minutes of the show were so tense, so powerful, so real that I was completely enthralled. Hannah’s death was… wow. Cuddy’s appearance at precisely the right time was great stuff. She loves House. She’s out of her mind for loving him, but she does love him.
The potential for House and Cuddy trying to carry on a relationship in secret next season is huge. The idea of House trying to play nice with his girlfriend/boss and her daughter should make for great TV. So many times, guy gets the girl = the beginning of the end. Not this time, I optimistically choose to believe. I think that the writers of House can give this relationship legs for at least a season.
