Possibly because of the economy, many TV shows are being canceled due to ratings in lieu of a better show that will attract more viewers.
This was originally going to be an article introducing a new show called Southland, a gritty copy drama that airs on NBC. After merely three weeks on television, however, the show seems to be losing interest, very quickly.
On April 10, when Southland first aired, it garnered a total of 9.72 million viewers and an overall rating of 3.2 for adults. This past week, week three, saw the ratings drop to around 6.68 million total and a 2.1 adult rating.
It has been well noted that new television shows have been hurting for viewers over the past several years. Many of them seem destined for great things but just never draw in the fanbase they should.
Southland is a fast paced cop drama that takes place in greater Los Angeles. The show follows cops, criminals, victims and their families alike to portray a much wider view on the effect crime has amongst society. It airs Thursdays at 10 pm (9 Central) on NBC.
The show is interesting, but it looks like it just didn’t have a good enough hook in its first few weeks to nail down viewers. The real problem is when the ratings drop down to about 4 million total viewers, even if those viewers are consistent and love the show, it may get canceled for not having enough.
A lot of shows that are canceled deserve to be, but every once in a while there’s one good show, like Southland, that takes a dive. Have any of you readers out there had a show you loved that got canned?
