Napoleon Dynamite Premier

by Ronald A. Rowe on February 2nd, 2012 | Comedy
Napoleon Dynamite premiered on Fox this month to a collective yawn from critics and fans alike.  Eight years ago, when we were all still giggling about Napoleon's deadpan humor and wonderfully understated emoting, an animated spinoff would have been a welcome treat.  Back then, if the first few episodes fell flat, as the 2012 version has, we'd probably have been willing to ride it out for a few months to give the writers time to adapt to the new medium.

But this isn't 2004.  The mere mention of a liger isn't quite enough to get us chuckling anymore.  Eight years Read More

by Ronald A. Rowe on November 10th, 2011 | Comedy
After a decade-long hiatus, Beavis and Butthead returned to the small screen last week. Much fanfare accompanied the second coming of Mike Judge’s earliest cartoon creation. MTV hyped the show heavily and pumped up the angle of the surly teens commenting on reality TV shows such as  Jersey Shore (as opposed to the bad music videos the boys watched in the old days). Fitting, I suppose, since MTV is no longer in the business of showing music videos, instead turning over much of its programming to reality TV.

The hype was only partly true. While B&B did watch a couple Read More

Napoleon Dynamite

by Ronald A. Rowe on July 21st, 2011 | Comedy, TV News
Sometimes you hear an idea and right away you know it’s a really good one… or a really bad one. Surfing the official Fox website this week, I came across a concept that is either great or horrible – nothing in between – but I just don’t know which one it is yet.

Amid the flurry of new (I Hate My Teenage Daughter, In the Flow with Affion Crockett, New Girl, Allen Gregory) and returning (The Cleveland Show, The Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, Raising Hope, Glee) comedies announced by Fox for the fall, there is mention of one show Read More

The Simpsons

by Ronald A. Rowe on January 19th, 2011 | Comedy, Sitcom
The Simpsons continues to roll along. Week after week, year after year, millions of fans tune in to watch the animated adventures and misadventures (more of the latter than the former) of Homer, Bart, and the rest of the Springfield gang. After 22 seasons, the show is closing in on a shocking 500th episode.

A good portion of the show’s longevity can be attributed to the nature of animation. If the characters were portrayed by live action actors, baby Maggie would have graduated college by now. Bart would have grown up, gotten married, had kids of his own, and gone Read More
