Leverage: The Office Job

by Ronald A. Rowe on December 16th, 2011 | Drama
It's nothing out of the ordinary to see a comedy parody a drama on TV. That's really become the bread and butter of a niche segment of the sitcom world. But for a drama to parody a comedy? That's a horse of a different color.

TNT's Leverage, now in its fourth season, took an opportunity to break the mold with the December 7th episode, The Office Job. The episode started out with the standard set up for the team's job. Nate Ford and his team of specialists must pose as efficiency experts to infiltrate an office where some nefarious goings Read More

Parks and Recreation’s Ron Swanson

by Ronald A. Rowe on December 7th, 2011 | Comedy, Sitcom
After starting as an attempt to duplicate the success that NBC had with The Office, Parks and Recreation has really come into its own in the past two seasons. There are a number of factors. The lead character, Leslie Knope, has transitioned from a female Michael Scott to her own person. A talented and diverse ensemble cast helps a lot. Good writing is essential. The addition of new cast members – Rob Lowe and Adam Scott - infused new life.

But one of my very favorite things about Parks and Recreation has been the development of the character of Ron Read More

The Office’s Swan Song?

by Ronald A. Rowe on October 25th, 2011 | Comedy, Sitcom
This season may be the swan song for The Office, but the show isn’t going to roll over and die just because Steve Carell has called it quits. The World Series deprived us of a new episode this week, but the season so far has been resoundingly… OK. The quality is really no better or worse that it was under the final season featuring the exploits of Michael Scott.

After a year of Cathy Bates guest spots, her role has been replaced by James Spader as new Sabre CEO Robert California. The enigmatic and charismatic new boss brings a fresh Read More

Nominations for the 2011 Emmy Awards have just been announced. Do you agree with the nominations? What do you think?

Lead Actress In A Comedy Series

Laura Linney, The Big C
Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation
Melissa McCarthy, Mike and Molly
Martha Plimpton, Raising Hope
Tina Fey, 30 Rock

Tina Fey has always dominated this category. I'd like to think that someone will come in from underneath and steal the win away from her. Maybe Laura Linney will do it . I don't have high hopes though. I think Tina Fey's got this in the bag.

The INs and OUTs of Comedy

by Ronald A. Rowe on May 25th, 2011 | Comedy, Reality TV, Sitcom
IN:
Ashton Kucher – The New Charlie on Two and a Half Men is younger, taller, funnier, charminger (yes, I know that’s not a real word) than the Old Charlie. Also, he’s not a stark raving mad drug addict. I was not particularly fond of Two and a Half Men in recent years, but I will be tuning in next season with great anticipation to see how the writers have their fun with the fact that Charlie is suddenly younger, taller, funnier, and charminger than ever before.

Reality TV – Every time I think that the networks cannot Read More
