ALPHAS on Syfy

by Ronald A. Rowe on July 27th, 2011 | Drama
Alphas is Syfy’s latest entry into original programming. After years of flops, misfires, and bad "group of attractive young people battling poorly computer-generated monsters" TV movies, Syfy may have its first bonafide original programming hit since a little show called Battlestar Galactica.

Alphas revolves around a group of individuals, each with one extraordinary power. Bill Harken can use his natural fight or flight response to generate incredible strength for short periods of time. Nina Theroux can persuade anyone to do whatever she asks (the fact that she is absolutely gorgeous doesn’t hinder her power any). Rachel Pirzad is a teenager Read More

Haven

by Ronald A. Rowe on July 23rd, 2010 | Drama, Summer TV
Did you catch the premier of Haven last week? Syfy’s new Friday night drama is showing some real promise at the onset.

The show is slated for 13 episodes and is based on a novella called The Colorado Kid by Stephen King. As such, I expected it to be a mini-series kind of a format. I was surprised to discover by the end of the first show that it is episodic, with a self-contained story each week that falls into a larger, season-long picture. So far, it looks like Haven is going to follow the familiar “Freak of the Week” Read More

Merlin

by Ronald A. Rowe on July 16th, 2010 | WMG
The Syfy Channel’s Merlin has gone largely unheralded so far, but I think it’s poised for cult following status any time now. The show follows the exploits of a young Merlin and his compatriots in Camelot.

Merlin is reminiscent of the early seasons of Smallville, another show that chronicled the early, untold adventures of a beloved literary character. Like Smallville, Merlin takes the characters that we know and love (or, in some cases, hate) and jumps back to the days before they were heroes (or villains).

One neat aspect of Merlin is that it takes a supporting character Read More

Warehouse 13

by Ronald A. Rowe on July 9th, 2010 | WMG
Warehouse 13 is coming back.  This Tuesday, July 6th, the  show returns to Syfy for its second season.  As an aside, changing the name of the network from "SciFi" to "Syfy" (pronounced exactly the same) is probably the silliest re-branding since Prince rechristened himself as an unpronounceable Egyptian symbol.

But network name games aside, I love Warehouse 13.  It's like a they cloned the X-Files, but they brought in the writers from Moonlighting.  It has all the sci-fi(or should I say 'syfy'?) elements of the X-Files, with none of the seriousness.  Warehouse 13 is a lighthearted take on a genre that Read More
