TV Opinion: The Following

prisonI have always been an avid reader of the true stories of serial killers. Ted Bundy, Jeffrey Dahmer, and John Wayne Gacy, to name a few. The investigations leading to their capture, and what they get away with before is mind boggling. According to the FBI, there are more than 300 serial killers who are “active” at this very second in the United States. The Following is a new program on FOX that explores this subject in great detail.

Ryan Hardy (played by Kevin Bacon), is the hunter of a psychotic, manipulative, and brilliant man, named Joe Carroll (played by James Purefoy), who is the cult leader of the killers. They remind me of the followers of Charles Manson, who will do anything they are asked – and are they asked to do a lot. Ryan Hardy, who is working with the FBI, tries to get an incarcerated Joe Carroll  to stop the killings that he is ordering his followers to carry out while he sits in jail. Each episode reveals a surprising new follower. You never know who it will be, and for this reason alone, the suspense keeps me watching to figure out who the next revealed follower will be.

Without giving away too much of the storyline, The Following is sure to be a hit with those who like crime drama, cult movies, and will appeal to horror fans. There is a lot of blood and gore in the show, but the well-written plot keeps me watching. I am not usually one for blood and guts shows, but this one has so much more to offer. It starts with the incredible acting of Kevin Bacon, and delves deeper into his relationships with the other characters on the show, including the wife of the cult leader, and beyond. I am not so sure I would let kids watch this show. Heck, I do not know if I would watch it by myself! If you are tired of unreal reality television and looking for something fresh and exciting, turn on The Following on Monday nights at 9 E.T., on FOX.4 recliners
