The newest season of Ugly Betty just premiered last Friday on ABC. So, what’s the verdict? Is ugly still beautiful?
This time around, she’s been promoted from executive assistant of Daniel Meade, Editor-in-Chief of MODE, to Associate Features Editor of MODE. She’s paid her debts, and she’s leveled up. But there’s a problem. Her ex-boyfriend who hates her is her boss, and everybody hates her. She’s back to square one.
MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD!
A lot of things have changed in Ugly Betty. Betty was promoted. Justin started his first day in high school. Christina’s gone. Wilhelmina’s less devious (for now). And Matt is back, as Betty’s boss. The atmosphere also has changed, and conflicts and problems have developed into another level. And it’s not exactly for the better. Gauging on the premiere alone, the show was pretty boring. In season 1, conflicts faced by Betty were funnier because she still tried to put the fun in her work.
But now, she’s grown up, and she’s changed. And there’s nothing fun in the conflicts and challenges anymore. Yes, it’s all about adjusting to a whole new ball game, but it seems it’s all about the competition and cut-throatness of it all. And as the audience, I am feeling it. But it did stop being a comedy show when Henry left in season 2.
I miss Gio. Gio would have been better for Betty. But Gio’s like Betty, he’s very ambitious. And the two of them might clash because of the big things they want to accomplish.
We’ll see. It’s the first two episodes. They might redeem themselves with the rest of the season. Betty’s still adorable. The only thing that’s not adorable about the show: its time slot on Fridays at 8pm. Maybe they’ll see the light and change it soon.

I miss Gio.
