Watching Greatness
First of all, I want to say that I go hot and cold on watching sports on TV. I can watch certain things religiously though and I came to realize that most of the things I watch have to do with watching greatness. I like to watch Lebron when the Cavaliers play. I like watching Kobe when the Lakers are on. I like watching Terps basketball (unfortunately, that is just a punishment and has nothing to do with greatness). But most of all, I like watching Tiger every time he tees it up.
In my opinion, Tiger is the greatest athlete of the last 100 years. No one has dominated his sport like Tiger dominates golf right now. He is just magical to watch. To me, the greatest measurement of how great he is that I will not watch golf on TV at all unless he is playing. I love watching anyone when he or she is so masterful — it is mesmerizing. I totally wish I was able to reach that level of greatness and failing that, I can’t peal myself away from watching it. In watching I am for a few hours able to be a part of the greatness.
Like watching Michaelangelo paint the Sistine Chapel ceiling or Monet swirl paint on a canvas, Tiger is an artist. Actually, he is more than an artist, he is magical. He can do something no one ever has and never may be able do again. The power of television lets me see it as he creates his masterpieces over 18 holes of grass, sand, and water.
So even if you are not a golf fan, watch Tiger the next time he tees it up. You may find that watching greatness is something that makes you appreciate all of life more.
