After reporting on the turbulent developments of the Today Show for the past year, another new host has been added into the mix. Ann Curry was let go last year and faced an abrupt and awkward departure. In Curry’s place, Savannah Guthrie began as co-host during the flagship 7 to 9 a.m. segment of the NBC program. Now, alongside of Savannah Guthrie, Willie Geist has been promoted to morning anchor, after creating his own television show, Morning Joe, on MSNBC. While he brings experience and charisma to the Today Show, NBC and the show’s producers still appeal to be struggling to rise up in the ratings.
Geist filled in for Matt Lauer of the Today Show for several years. In September of 2012 it was announced that Geist would fill the space left in the Ann Curry/Savannah Guthrie seat. Geist made his Today debut on November 12, 2012. He also currently co-hosts on the irreverent early morning program, Way Too Early and then continues to host his brainchild, Morning Joe. Geist’s transition is expected to be smooth, unlike his predecessors’. He has appeared on Today to discuss his promotion and continued to appear to make the transition much smoother.
The executive producer of Today claimed to be thrilled to add Willie to the team as he brings a solid news background and an attitude of creativity and humor. He will contribute to the overall news and talk show atmosphere of the Today Show. He will be facilitating the Today Show’s transition into a talk show from its news show roots. Geist will have a complete hour to develop his own segment with a variety of news topics. This is all a part of the Today Show’s plans to surpass Good Morning America in ratings for the year of 2012. The Today Show reigned as the top rated morning news and talk show in America for 15 years, but recently fell to number two.
Geist will join the cast and provide a fresh face and new viewpoints. Matt Lauer, Savannah Guthrie, Al Roker, and Natalie Morales round out the Today team. Geist definitely is worth watching early in the morning, as he is constantly filled with plenty of energy and humor. With this balance of talents and newscasting experience, the Today Show should be back on top of the morning news ratings by next year. However, it still remains unfortunate that Ann Curry was so abruptly let go. Perhaps Geist’s charisma and talent will bring a little bit of faith back to the network and the Today Show. Be sure to tune in every weekday morning to NBC to catch Willie Geist on the Today Show.
